22 Keukenhof Gardens

May 5—Day Four of the Wanderlust Tour in Keukenhof Gardens

“Welcome to the Keukenhof, the largest flower garden in Europe!” Lana exclaimed, as her group passed through the entrance gates. She didn’t have to fake her enthusiasm. Even through the mass of tourists milling around, she could tell it was gorgeous. Based on her guests’ expressions, they were as excited to be here as she was.

She walked them over to a river of blue flowers flowing through a field of orange tulips, so that Randy could locate their guide. Lana breathed in the perfume of hundreds of petals and pollen, reveling in the sweet and earthy fragrances.

It felt strange to be back in front of the group and pretending as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened yesterday. Lana had expected her guests would be somber and quiet today. But they were quite the opposite. If anything, the mood was upbeat and jovial.

Tammy had already gotten in touch with her old boss and asked whether it was possible to appeal Priscilla’s decision and claim her bonus after all. Apparently he had always been sweet on her and was quite pleased to hear from her again. On the bus ride over, she couldn’t stop talking about how accommodating he was being to her request.

Even Anne had a new spring to her step. Her hair was freshly washed, and her clothes appeared to be clean for a change. It was almost as if Priscilla’s death had lifted a weight that had been holding the business owner down.

Yet what shocked Lana most of all was how chipper and perky Daphne was. One would never have guessed that the woman had lost her mother the previous afternoon. Was this front of positivity and normality her way of dealing with the grief? Or was she truly happy that her mother was gone? Even now she had a smile on her face as she messaged her boyfriend. Since Priscilla’s death, her daughter hadn’t let her telephone go. As strange as her reaction seemed, Lana tried not to judge Daphne, knowing that everyone dealt with death in different ways.

Lana only wished she could forget about her own mother’s betrayal so easily. Every time she thought of Gillian, her heart turned to stone. Despite Dotty’s assurances that it was just business, Lana could not accept that her mother had been so callous. McGruffin Wood had destroyed her life, and Gillian’s agency had resurrected its reputation afterwards. She tried reminding herself that Dotty admitted she would have done the same, but the pain was too fresh.

Thankfully Gillian hadn’t come down to the lobby this morning. When Randy went up to her room, she made clear to him that she would steer clear of Lana until her daughter wanted her to be around. Lana smirked; that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.

Gillian’s betrayal stung so badly that Lana had trouble keeping her eyes dry. She made a mental note to get in touch with Gillian’s assistant after today’s tour.
